Abortion: We have to consider the abortion time limits in light of scientific advances. I feel it is time for a full and frank debate on the issue, in the open, to decide what we as a society feel is acceptable. I am minded however to favour a change in the time limits.
Above all, it is time we addressed why there are so many unwanted pregnancies. There are roughly 700,000 births a year. The number of abortions nears 200,000. A lower rate of abortions must surely be the most favourable outcome for everyone involved.
Euthanasia: Having spoken to doctors about euthanasia, I am wary about the scope of the term ‘euthanasia’ and would not therefore support it. I am however in favour of legally assisted dying for terminally ill patients. I believe that this is a matter for individual choice. There would have to be a clear indication that this was the patient’s wish, such as with a living will. Any change in legislation must be accompanied by a clear and robust legal framework, in order to prevent another Harold Shipman as well as reassuring doctors.
Stem Cell Research: I am in favour of stem cell research that seeks to find cures for diseases such as cancer and Parkinson's. However I would not support its use in the pursuit of "designer babies" or for use in cosmetic surgery.
