Winchester MP Mark Oaten has accused the Post Office of ripping the heart out of Hampshire’s rural communities.
The response comes as the Post Office today announced its decision on post office closures in the area. It has been decided that the Durley, Upper Curdridge and Shawford branches are to be closed. West Meon and Micheldever to become part of the out-reach programme and Littleton to be closed in three months time unless residents can put forward a case for financially running it themselves.
Commenting on plans to close a number of Post Offices in his constituency he said “Whilst I understand that times move on because of the internet, these closures are yet another example of how our traditional communities in rural areas are being torn apart.
“I am disappointed the Post Office has ignored the many letters of objection, in particular from the residents of Durley. The decision to part close West Meon is madness. The Post Office made this decision on old data before the opening of the new village community shop and post office which has been a huge success.
“Finally, I welcome the 3 month stay of execution for Littleton and hope the Post Office is genuine in their offer of talks with the community”.
Martin Tod, Liberal Democrat candidate for Winchester, added: “The fundamental issue remains the central Government decision to cut the national number of post offices by 2,500.
“Even so, it is very disappointing that all the input given by local people has had such a relatively small impact. As local people repeatedly stated in their letters and submissions, these closures will have a serious impact on the elderly and vulnerable groups.
