Mark Oaten and Martin Tod Speak Out

Against Post Office Closures

Mark Oaten MP and Martin Tod have spoken out against the proposed post office closures in the Winchester district and Chandlers Ford.

The Post Offices proposed for closure in the Winchester district are:

·      Durley

·      Littleton

·      Newtown

·      Shawford

·      Upper Curdridge

In Chandler's Ford, the Bournemouth Road branch has also been proposed for closure.

In addition, two post offices are proposed for closure and replacement by an 'outreach service' - local people will be consulted on which kind of outreach they want

·      Micheldever (8 hours)

·      West Meon (8 hours)

People opposed to the closures can write to:

Tim Nickolls
Network Development Manager

or email consultation@postoffice.co.uk

Mark Oaten MP commented:

“I'm strongly opposed to these closures.

“Post offices have been under pressure ever since the Government pulled out the Post Office Card Account and started cutting back on other services.

“Post Offices are lifeline in many rural areas, particularly for the elderly and people without cars.

“This is a very serious problem - in some cases, losing the post office is going to mean losing the last shop in the village.

Martin Tod commented:

“We are campaigning very hard against these closures in the affected areas.  To be successful, we need to make a strong case for each post office about how seriously closure will affect the local community.

“The most important thing that people can do is write to the Post Office and clearly explain how the loss of the post office is going to affect them.

“I think we have a good case for almost all of the ones in the new Winchester constituency.

"Longer-term, I'd like to see the Government and local Councils put more business through post offices to help sustain the network.
