MP TAKES ON EURO ROLE
Winchester MP Mark Oaten has been appointed by the Prime Minister to be a representative on the Council of Europe.
Mr Oaten will begin his duties later this month, taking his place in the UK delegation led by former deputy Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. John Prescott MP.
Founded in 1949, the Council of Europe seeks to develop common and democratic principles throughout Europe, based on the European Convention on Human Rights and other reference texts on the protection of individuals.
Mr Oaten will be joining committees looking into issues of Defence and Equal Opportunities.
Commenting, Mark Oaten said:
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with parliamentarians from 46 other countries on a range of issues including defence, the economy and human rights.
“Whatever your views of the European Union, it is undoubtedly the right way forward for parliamentarians to work together to find common solutions to the challenges facing European society.
“The Council of Europe is unique in providing a platform for parliamentarians from so many different countries to discuss a vast array of important issues and make recommendations to the Council of Ministers.
“I very much look forward to taking my place in the delegation later on this month.
