Mark Oaten is encouraging all the users of off mains gas including heating oil and LPG to contact Consumer Focus and take part in their first full investigation into the heating fuel market.
Consumer Focus has replaced Energywatch as the consumer champion for energy users and with its extended remit is looking for views from people, especially those living in rural communities, on their experiences with energy prices and their energy suppliers.
Off mains energy customers are often subject to higher tariffs and huge increases in oil prices has resulted in many rural Winchester residents struggling to pay their bills. Mark has tabled Early Day Motions specifically on off-mains heating fuels and their regulation and the Consumer Focus probe turns attention to this fuel sector which will help to influence Government policy.
The Government has repeatedly failed to take up opportunities to help off-mains consumers who are currently completely neglected by existing fuel poverty schemes. And with the money for Warmfront payments running out many constituents have contacted Mark urging action.
People with concerns about their energy bills and suppliers can contact Consumer Focus directly by email to regulated.industries@consumerfocus.org.uk
Mark Oaten commented:
“I get contacted about heating bills and off-mains oil and gas suppliers by constituents a lot and it’s not satisfactory to have to inform them that the Warmfront money has run out, or that despite recommendations, off-mains fuel isn’t properly regulated.
“So it’s excellent news that Consumer Focus has decided to dedicate some research to this area and I really want it to be as reflective as possible of people’s actual experiences.
“So we have been asked by Consumer Focus to get the message out there that this is happening, that everyone can contribute to it and that the Government cannot ignore the issue. So I would encourage everyone to get in touch with them and let them know what you think.
