Mark Oaten Seeks Views on the Pharmacy White Paper

24th Sep 08

Mark Oaten is today sending out a letter to all pharmacies and doctors surgeries in his constituency seeking their views on the changes proposed in the Governments Pharmacy White Paper.

The White Paper is the first stage of the process and will form the basis of a Bill to come before Parliament. It proposes a number of changes to the pharmaceutical industry which are already causing heated debate.

Amongst the changes suggested is a commitment to make pharmacies ‘healthy living’ centres which will be the first port of call for treatments of minor ailments and health advice. Controversially it also seeks to amend the 100 hour a week pharmacies and the law on where prescriptions can be dispensed. This is particularly important for rural communities.

Mark Oaten commented:

“These changes are wide-ranging and they will have an impact. I want to find out what the views are on the various issues from the relevant stakeholders so I can better understand what this will mean for my constituents.

“So I am writing to all doctors and pharmacists to get their views and learn what it means to them. I know it’s of particular concern for rural constituencies such as mine and I want to give the people directly involved the chance to speak. I would really appreciate it if anyone with an interest could get in touch.
